Dwight Gayle joins Newcastle United – Twitter reacts

Dwight Gayle has completed a £10 million transfer from Premier League side Crystal Palace to Championship new boys Newcastle United. In doing so, Gayle drops a division to join Rafa Benitez’s side, a year after a potential £8 million deal to Bristol City was rejected by the then 24-year-old.

A year older, with a further 16 Premier League appearances and three goals under his belt, the 5 foot 9 flyer (nicknamed ‘Gayle Force’) has decided to head north from the capital in search of regular first team football.

Gayle’s Premier League goal-scoring record is not bad at all considering the somewhat limited game time – 15 in 63 appearances, many of these coming from the substitute bench. As Alan Pardew claimed last year, “he has 20 goals a season in him”, and that will most likely ring true this time next year, if Newcastle fulfil their potential in England’s second division.

The Magpies have already signed goalkeeper Matz Sels from Belgian side Gent for a reported £5 million, and are also heavily linked with Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie. The North East outfit may have lost Andros Townsend to Palace, and some other players may depart, but with signals of intent such as retaining Rafa as manager, signing players of the calibre of Gayle and potentially Ritchie, you would not bet against an immediate return to the top flight of English football.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the news of Dwight Gayle’s transfer:

Gayle blatantly made an impression on Crystal Palace fans, many wishing him well on him journey north:

Clearly some, however, were put off by the price tag…

A highlight when scrawling through Dwight Gayle tweets has to be this kit reveal, starring Gayle, accompanied by the music from ‘Titanic’. If this doesn’t get you Newcastle fans, nothing will:

For what it’s worth (perhaps not as much as £10 million) the opinion of this author is echoed in the tweet below:
