Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven earned himself a start for the Netherlands as they played out a 1-1 draw against Hungary in a UEFA Nations League clash.

The home side looked like they were on course for three points as Rolland Sallai gave them the lead in the first half.

With ten minutes left on the clock, the Netherlands’ misery was compounded as Virgil van Dijk was sent off for two bookable offenses.

However, they dug deep and found a late equaliser through Denzel Dumfries to secure a hard-fought draw.

Van de Ven was stationed as a left-back and played the full 90 minutes for his country. With Van Dijk unavailable for the game against Germany, the Dutch media feel he could finally be set to play at the heart of the backline next week.

Hungary sat back and put ten men behind the ball after they scored, so Van de Ven didn’t have too much space to exploit with his devastating pace.

He was relatively untroubled and Dutch newspaper AD rated his performance six out of ten and tipped him to play in central defence against Germany.

“The calls for Van de Ven grew louder and louder. But a starting spot against a Hungarian team that retreated in masses, it was not tailor-made for the speed devil.

“For Van de Ven now a chance beckons to show himself in Munich as a center back now that Van Dijk will not be there against the Germans. The place in the axis of the field, that is also his preference Van de Ven said earlier himself.”

Van de Ven’s stats vs Hungary

Van de Ven had a staggering 111 touches of the ball and boasted a pass accuracy of 96% (92/96 passes completed) as he played the full 90 minutes for the Netherlands as a left-back.

The Tottenham defender made three clearances, won one aerial duel and three ground duels as he finished the game with a Sofascore rating of 7.

Signed for £43m last summer from Wolfsburg, Van de Ven is showing his class and club and country and has established himself as one of the most exciting players in the world in his position.

He spoke about his desire to play in his preferred central defensive role for his country and looks likely to get his wish against Germany, so it remains to be seen how he fares in Van Dijk’s absence.
