Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo chose an excellent time to deliver one his most complete performances in recent memory at Euro 2024 on Tuesday evening.
Gakpo started as Ronald Koeman’s left winger as part of a dynamic front four along with Xavi Simons, Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay.
The Liverpool man looked at the top of his game out on the left, able to cut inside and time his runs into the box perfectly.
The role is undoubtedly his best, even if Jurgen Klopp did often enjoy using Gakpo as a false nine during his time at Anfield.
But under compatriot Arne Slot’s guidance, it will be interesting to see if Gakpo is returned to the wing – an area of the pitch that was so crucial to the new Liverpool manager’s teams in the past.

The possibility of Liverpool adding a winger this summer has been touted, perhaps the likes of Juventus’ Federico Chiesa.
But Gakpo will be hoping that his dominant performance for his country against Romania may scupper those ideas.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo compared to ‘Arjen Robben in his best days’
On the back of the 3-0 win which progressed the Netherlands to a quarter-final date with Turkiye, Dutch media have now been sharing their reviews of Gakpo’s display..
AD stated that Gakpo is now in excellent company after his latest goal at a major international tournament.
Handing the Liverpool man an 8/10, they wrote: “Gakpo’s 1-0 puts the Liverpool player in a nice company.
“Together with Dennis Bergkamp, Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay, he is one of the players who managed to score at least three times in two final tournaments.
“The 1-0 against the Romanians gave the Dutch a much-needed break. Gakpo dribbled past Andrei Ratiu and fired from eighteen metres at 121 kilometres per hour into the near corner.
“The assist for the 2-0 was also professional.”

VoetbalPrimeur compared Gakpo’s display to former Premier League star Arjen Robben, who was often devastating cutting inside from the wing.
Also declaring the display an 8/10, they shared: “By far the most important Dutch attacker at this European Championship.
“His goal was like Arjen Robben in his best days – and his assist made the difference against Romania.
“Gakpo is now joint top scorer at the Euros.”.
An accomplished performance for the Liverpool man who seems primed for improvement under Slot.
Liverpool fans who watched Tuesday’s game will have been thrilled to see Gakpo playing with so much confidence and authority, hoping the feeling continues into next season.
