'Dyche had been considering': Journalist shares worrying Chris Wood news for Newcastle fans
Newcastle United paid £25m for Chris Wood this week as they raided relegation rivals Burnley to bring in what they hope is a striker to get them the goals to stay in the Premier League.
Wood arrived after Newcastle learned of a release-clause in his contract. PIF acted quickly, with Eddie Howe now given a focal point for his attack for the second half of the season. The Magpies are still looking for other strikers, with Hugo Ekitike among the names being considered.
The signing of Wood has been met with a mixed response from all quarters. On one side, there is an appreciation of his ability and experience at Premier League level. But on the reverse of that, there are worries that the Mags have just spent £25m on a 30-year-old with just three goals this season.
And according to respected journalist Duncan Castles, Newcastle fans might be wary of Wood, as he claims Sean Dyche was even considering dropping the big striker.
“You can look at it another way (other than Wood scoring goals for Newcastle), and that’s that Chris Wood this season has only scored three goals in 17 appearances. Despite starting every match for Burnley and playing 90% of the minutes. Sean Dyche had been considering leaving him out of the team due to his lack of form,” Castles said on his Transfer Window Podcast.
“Effectively, you’ve just given a relegation rival £25m to replace a striker who was underperforming for them.”
Wood is set to be handed his Newcastle debut this weekend when they take on Watford. It could be a huge game, with the Magpies set to move out of the bottom three if they can win.
TBR’s View: Wood A Good Signing But Castles Makes A Great Point
While Wood is a decent enough signing if he can get going quickly, Castles makes a great point here about the money given to Burnley.
If the Clarets can spend it wisely, they might end up with someone better in anyway. Certainly, Wood had gone stale at Turf Moor, so there’s a chance a new face can really help. On the flip side, Newcastle might get the very best Chris Wood and he fires them to safety.
It will be interesting to see how this one pans out though. Come May, we will know if it was money well spent by PIF.
