Dreams of Arsenal move, plays 4-2-3-1: The high-intensity 23-year-old midfielder set for Euro 2020
Arsenal have plenty of work to do this summer as they look to build on a dismal 2020-21 season.
However, the Gunners will almost certainly also be casting an eye on Euro 2020.
Some of the continent’s finest players will be on show during the tournament.
Arsenal quartet Bernd Leno, Granit Xhaka, Kieran Tierney, and Bukayo Saka have made the cut for their nations.
The Gunners will keep tabs on them and at the same time, probably see whether any potential targets can also shine.
Amongst the players hoping to shine at Euro 2020 is a 23-year-old Arsenal fan who dreams of a move to the Emirates.
That player is Xaver Schlager, who plays for Wolfsburg and will represent Austria at the tournament.
Ahead of Euro 2020 getting underway, The Athletic looked tournament-bound players who could potentially be on the rumour mill.
Schlager is among those, and while he’s not reported to be on anyone’s radar at this moment in time, this could well change.
The Athletic talks about how he is quickly developing into one of the best young central midfielders in the Bundesliga.
They added: “Operating in the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1, he is a high-intensity player who is keen to press the ball high in the opposition’s final third.
“He combines his relentless workrate and mentality with physicality and technical talent.”
Arsenal are his “dream club”
Schlager famously revealed his desire to play for Arsenal just a month after joining Wolfsburg in 2019.
“The league just isn’t that attractive. I haven’t reached my final goal yet, now the next goal is coming.
“I’ve been a fan of Arsenal since I was a child. That’s my dream club, and it’s my dream to get to play there.”
Admittedly, The Athletic claims that Schlager is likely to stay put this summer.
And they add that, “somewhat unfortunately”, his profile is quite similar to that of Thomas Partey.
However, with Granit Xhaka reportedly close to leaving, there could potentially be room for another “bruiser”.
And Arsenal should certainly take a look at Schlager – who knows, they could go on to fulfil his dream.
