'Dream to reality': Journalist claims Newcastle now think they can pull off 'sensational' January signing
Newcastle United have been linked with England international James Maddison in recent months.
The Northern Echo recently claimed that the Magpies have put the Leicester star at the top of their January wish-list.
During the World Cup, Chronicle Live reported that Maddison’s England teammates were talking Newcastle up to him.
Now, GiveMeSport journalist Dean Jones has provided an update on the state of play involving the Magpies and Maddison.
He claims Newcastle believe they can pull off a January deal for the Three Lions ace, something which may not have been the case before.
Jones acknowledges “it will not be easy” to land him next month, but he says sources have told him “it is not impossible”.
“The prospect of having Maddison on the right flank has slowly been turning from a dream to reality for Newcastle, who believe they can pull off this deal,” Jones wrote on GiveMeSport.
“In January it will not be easy but sources around it say it is not impossible.
“The environment, the coaching set-up and the leverage of the team offer a very intriguing step if this can come through in the coming weeks.
“It’s dampened by the fact Brendan Rodgers would rather not lose him but, ultimately, an offer in the region of £60million would almost certainly get this going.”
A realistic marquee signing for Newcastle
Maddison has been one of the most sought-after Premier League players of the last few transfer windows.
Indeed, he forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans for the World Cup thanks to his dazzling form.
Maddison has seven goals and four assists from just 13 league appearances this term.
His heroics have helped Leicester pull away from the bottom three, and they’re now in 13th in the table.
Maddison would be a superb acquisition for Newcastle.
He is a versatile and “sensational” player who can feature as a playmaker, winger and second striker.
Maddison’s talent, age and current club – currently not in title or European contention – mean he shouldn’t be out of Newcastle’s reach.
Magpies fans can dream big again thanks to their new owners, and Maddison is exactly the kind of player they should be looking at.
