Douglas Luiz will face his old club this weekend when Aston Villa take on reigning champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
He has already caught the eye with some long-range strikes and may get the opportunity to show Pep Guardiola what he’s missing out on after his summer move.
As per the Birmingham Mail, Dean Smith said of Luiz: “He’s Pep’s loss and my gain. I met Pep at the League Managers’ meeting and he spoke to me then, he was very disappointed they couldn’t get that work permit.
“Pep said, ‘You’ve got a really good lad there’. There is no better endorsement for the boy.”

TBR’s View – Luiz has the chance to show why Pep is such a fan
Villa have grabbed goals away from home against Arsenal and Tottenham this season and although City are a different kettle of fish, it’s likely that Smith will approach the game the same way.
That puts the emphasis on his players to have confidence in possession as well as keep their discipline and Luiz is capable of doing both.
He will have a point to prove against his former manager, who clearly rates him so highly, and will likely need to have his best game in a Villa shirt – if selected – to get a result.
