Dorigo suggests Leeds' Wilfried Gnonto has the potential to do anything

Tony Dorigo has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that Wilfried Gnonto has the potential to do almost anything after the Leeds United starlet started for Italy in their most recent international fixture.

Gnonto may be awaiting the chance to make his debut for Leeds. But he has proved to be one of the most talked-about players during this international break.

The 18-year-old was named once again in Roberto Mancini’s Italy squad for their crucial Nations League fixtures. And he played his role in helping Italy book their spot in the semi-final.

He started against Hungary on Monday, and played his part in the opening goal.

The Italian media issued mixed reactions to his performance. His work-rate was lauded. But there seemed to be a feeling that he is far from being the finished product.

‘Patience will be required’

Dorigo also believes that Gnonto has a long way to go. But he issued an exciting claim regarding the teenager’s ceiling.

“Mancini is trying to find a formula for players going forward, not so much for now but for a year, two or three years’ time and in that period Gnonto will get a lot better with experience,” he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Right now he’s getting that experience in the fiercest of environments – in an Italian side that hasn’t qualified for the World Cup.

“If he can grow in that atmosphere and in these circumstances then I think he can do just about anything but patience will be required.”

“He’ll come back from the Italian squad absolutely flying and hopefully he can settle into Yorkshire life and Premier League football really quickly because I do think he could be a brilliant asset for the club,” he added.

Gnonto has potential to do anything

Understandably, plenty of fans are imploring Jesse Marsch to include Gnonto in the squad for this weekend’s clash with Aston Villa.

In fairness, he does possess the kind of attributes that would allow the forward to make an impact if he does feature at Villa Park. He boasts frightening pace and energy.

But it must not be forgotten that, had deadline day gone to plan, Leeds would not have signed Gnonto until a future window. They were aware that he is still a work in progress.

On paper, he is starting games for Italy. But it is important not to pile the pressure on him week-in, week-out just yet.
