Fabrizio Romano confirms Donyell Malen set for Dortmund; Liverpool have missed out

Liverpool appear to have missed out on signing Donyell Malen, with the Dutch forward set to complete a move to Borussia Dortmund.

The speedy PSV star had emerged as a target for the Reds this summer, with reports a few weeks back suggesting a £34m deal was in the offing.

However, any hope Liverpool had of landing Malen seems to have been extinguished. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on his Twitter that Malen has agreed a deal with Dortmund. Personal terms are sorted, and the move is expected to be finalised soon.

News of Malen’s move to Germany will be a blow of sorts to Liverpool and their boss, Jurgen Klopp.

Despite adding Ibrahima Konate in defence, Klopp is keen to bring fresh impetus to his attack. Malen, then, was seen as someone who could do just that.

However, Liverpool will now have to look elsewhere barring a late miracle.

Body blow

Despite their being so many players out there to go for, Malen did seem to tick a lot of boxes for Liverpool.

Quick, able to play across the front three, and young enough to develop and contribute for years, it’s easy to see why Klopp wanted him.

The Reds must now move quickly to cement any other targets the have in attacking areas. The likes of Salah and Mane need competition, much like Diogo Jota has brought to the fold.

Malen would have done the same, so it’s now important for Liverpool to move onto the next one.
