Donyell Malen has previously confirmed that Arsenal wanted to keep him

Donyell Malen has been linked with a potential return to Arsenal this week, and it is not for the first time.

The Dutchman has caught the eye at PSV Eindhoven and according to Soccernews, the Gunners are keen on bringing the 21-year-old back to North London in the future, with Juventus also keeping tabs on the situation.

It would be an expensive venture, with Malen valued at £22.5 million. Considering Arsenal sold him for just £540,000 (The Sun) in 2017, that would certainly be a dose of humble pie for Arsenal.

Except, that is not the case at all, as Arsenal never actually wanted to let him go.

Despite rumours of ill-discipline or weight trouble, Arsenal never pushed Malen out of the club that summer.

Quite the contrary. The young striker had been on the club’s pre-season tour and was knocking on the door of the first-team.

Rather than getting kicked out, Malen pushed for an exit himself, as he has explained in the past. In fact, Arsenal even offered Malen a new contract.

“That I was sent away from Arsenal is certainly not true. I still had a contract for a year and Arsenal even wanted to extend that,” Malen told De Telegraaf in May of last year. “I don’t play football for the money. I never did that. Otherwise, I would not have left England.”

Instead of signing a new deal Malen decided to go and play regular football elsewhere and the results have been clear to see.

Now Arsenal might finally get a chance to bring him back, should they follow up in this reported interest.

It is just a shame it might end up costing the Gunners such a pretty penny.
