‘Don’t know what else’: Ian Wright says there’s only two words he can use to describe Tottenham right now

Ian Wright says that Tottenham are a counter-attacking team despite their manager Antonio Conte protesting otherwise.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, journalist Miguel Delaney said that Conte always disagrees when a reporter says Spurs are a counter-attacking side.

But Arsenal legend Wright said that they cannot be described as anything else given how deeply they defended at the Emirates Stadium earlier this month.

Wright said: “The thing is when I watched them at the Emirates I don’t know what else you could call them if you don’t call them counter attacking.

“They were so deep in their own box there was no other way to describe how they were playing.

“I thought they weren’t tight enough on people. We know they’re capable of breaking with Harry Kane and ‘bam’. But I don’t think you can describe Spurs as anything other than counter attacking, as they haven’t got a player who links the play in midfield so you can play out.

“I can’t understand why he corrects that. I see Tottenham as a pure counter attacking side.”

Presumably Conte’s point is that Spurs do not play on the break in every single game. Take the Everton match at the weekend for example.

Spurs dominated possession and eventually found a route through, although it would be fair to say they are not a free-flowing attacking side.

They are winning matches and that is all that matters as Spurs look to create something special in Conte’s first full season in charge.

Manchester United are up next and Conte may play on the break at Old Trafford but you would fancy him to get a result there with that approach.
