‘Don’t get it’: Merson reacts to potential Aubameyang decision before Arsenal clash

Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he does not understand why Mikel Arteta would consider bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back into the Arsenal side for their next Premier League clash, against West Ham on Wednesday.

Aubameyang looks to be facing an uncertain future. He was left out of the match day squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Southampton. And it turned out that he was left out due to a breach of discipline.

As reported by The Athletic, Aubameyang was given permission to fly to France last Wednesday. However, he was expected to return later that day and train on Thursday.

He was reportedly on time for training. But having flown back on the Thursday, Arteta decided to leave Aubameyang out a few days later.

Ultimately, the decision did not hurt the Gunners’ fortunes on the pitch. They comfortably beat the Saints. And debates are now being had regarding whether Aubameyang should remain as captain.

Arteta hinted that Aubameyang will be available to feature against West Ham this week. But Merson suggested that there is no reason for the Arsenal boss to start the striker.

“It’s fair play from the manager but I’m not sure about him being involved against West Ham on Wednesday,” he told Sky Sports.

“I don’t get that at all. Fair play to Arteta for what he’s done and how he’s handled it so far, but for me, they won the game easily, so why bring him back in?”

Arteta will hope controversy brings the best out of Aubameyang when he does return for Arsenal

Aubameyang has not had the best season. But with Arsenal lacking striker options, there is absolutely no question that the Gunners would benefit from having an in-form Aubameyang.

Arteta will therefore, be hoping that this situation inspires the striker. He may come back feeling that he has a point to prove.

It would be a big surprise if he started against West Ham. But he may well get a chance to win his critics around in the weeks ahead.
