Arsenal were supposedly keen on bringing Donny van de Beek to the Emirates Stadium, but lacked the funds to bring a move to fruition.

That is the claim made by the player’s agent, who says the Gunners were among several sides vying for the Dutch international’s signature.

The Ajax star has officially just completed a move to Arsenal’s old Premier League rivals Manchester United, in a deal reported to be worth around £40 million (Daily Mail).

United wrapped up a deal fairly quickly, with news of their interest only breaking last Sunday.

According to Sjaak Swart, Arsenal just didn’t have the funds to challenge United.

He told Ajax showtime (translated and quoted by evening Standard): “There were more clubs with interest, such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal.

“Yes, they [Arsenal] really wanted him.

“But they just couldn’t get the money for a transfer. Even the biggest clubs struggle. Arsenal is a great club, but Manchester United will certainly be an interesting adventure.”

TBR’s View – van de Beek may become Arsenal regret

van de Beek’s time at Manchester United may end up making for uncomfortable viewing for Arsenal fans.

He has lit up the Eredivisie since coming into the Ajax first-team, and has also performed on the international stage with the Netherlands.

Arsenal arguably still haven’t replaced Aaron Ramsey with someone who can go from box-to-box – and van de Beek is certainly that kind of player as he surely will demonstrate for the Red Devils.
