New Manchester United player Donny van de Beek has claimed his international teammate Steven Bergwijn asked him if he would join Tottenham Hotspur.

The star officially completed a move to Old Trafford earlier this week, with BBC Sport reporting the fee paid to Ajax totals £40 million (BBC Sport).

van de Beek supposedly had interest from several of Europe’s top clubs, with his agent Sjaak Swart claiming Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal were all keen.

According to the van de Beek himself, a move to Tottenham was being talked up by Bergwijn.

He told Algemeen Dagblad, (quoted by Evening Standard): “Steven Bergwijn texted me to see whether I would play for Spurs. But I chose United.”

Spurs have reportedly been interested in van de Beek in the past, with football.london claiming in April that the club had made ‘tentative enquiries’ over the midfielder.

Former manager Mauricio Pochettino was a big admirer of the 23-year-old maestro, labelling him the star of Ajax in May 2019 (El Pais).

TBR’s View – Not to be

Bergwijn probably knows better than most how good van de Beek really is given they are international teammates, but it doesn’t seem the club were ever that serious about landing him, especially once Pochettino departed.

No offer was ever tabled for the star, and it remains to be seen if he’ll now develop into a major regret for the north Londoners.
