'Done very well': Emery says £48k-a-week Aston Villa ace has been superb in training ahead of Old Trafford trip

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has hinted that Morgan Sanson could feature in Thursday’s Carabao Cup trip to Manchester United.

The new Villans boss handed the midfielder his first appearance of the season at the weekend.

Sanson replaced Leander Dendoncker in stoppage time in the 3-1 win over Manchester United.

As the 28-year-old entered the pitch, the Villa supporters gave him a raucous welcome back.

It was his first appearance in seven months for Villa, having been frozen out by previous manager Steven Gerrard.

Sanson made just three Premier League starts under the former boss.

However, Emery has decided to hand Sanson a fresh start at Villa Park.

And ahead of Villa’s cup meeting with Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils, the Spaniard spoke highly of the £48,000-a-week ace.

“He’s done very well in the days that we have been in the training ground,” the Birmingham Mail quotes him as saying.

“I knew him when he was playing in Marseille when I was in Paris. I think he’s a good player.

“He was injured and out of matches. I think he can help us.

“Against United, for example, in the last minute, he kept the position he usually plays and his skills were good to help us.”

‘Hope he can kick on now’

It’s great to see Sanson back in the fold and given a chance to prove himself again at Villa.

For a while, it looked as though he could’ve been on the way out of B6, but that’s no longer a near-certainty.

Ashley Preece of the Birmingham Mail recently said happier times lie ahead for Sanson.

“That’s the word on the street/at Bodymoor Heath, pal,” he wrote in a fan Q&A.

“Looks much more happier, doesn’t he, smiling from ear to ear when pal Digne scored yesterday and was blown away by the fans’ backing when he came on late on.

“You do wonder what happened previously under Gerrard… fair play to him, hope he can kick on now under Unai.”
