Done Deal: Tottenham confirm signing of Serge Aurier from PSG
Tottenham have announced the signing of Serge Aurier from PSG for a fee of £23 million, according to BBC Sport. The deal was held up by work permit complications, due to the right-back’s run-ins with the law, but he has now been granted permission to move to the Premier League. The 24-year-old becomes the club’s fourth summer signing.
Who is he?
The right-back has spent his career in France with this being his first transfer out of the country. He made his name at Toulouse and broke through in impressive fashion to earn a move to PSG. It has been a mixed time for him in Paris, but he has enough talent to tempt Tottenham into taking a gamble on him.
What is the deal?
Aurier is viewed as a direct replacement for Kyle Walker, who was sold for £50 million. The Ivorian arrives for more than half the price at £23 million. This represents great business for the North London club.
What is his style of play?
Tottenham demand a lot from their wing-backs and Aurier should fit in nicely in the squad in terms of ability. He looks to attack at every opportunity and carries a threat in the final third, with his pace and movement. The right-back is capable of beating players and providing good support for the attack.
Defensively, Aurier is accomplished and he will offer more balance to the team than the current right-backs in the squad. Tottenham have signed him as they want a player with experience to take up the role. Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker-Peters are liked by the club, but the new signing offers a significant improvement.
What will his arrival mean for Tottenham?
Mauricio Pochettino will be pleased to have an experienced right-back available to him. Aurier has experience in the Champions League and he is likely to be the starter from day one. Tottenham like to rotate, which means that Trippier will be given opportunities. However, the 24-year-old Ivorian will be the first-choice right-back for the big games.
What is the reaction?
After joining the club, Aurier spoke to the official website and opened up on the move:
“This is a huge and exciting opportunity at a massive football club and I am determined to prove myself as a professional both on and off the pitch. This is a fresh start for me and I will do everything to make the Spurs fanbase, which is huge and diverse, proud of me. The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier.”
