Don Hutchison compares Leeds United star to Robbie Fowler

Don Hutchison has told Optus Sport’s The Season So Far show that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford reminds him of Robbie Fowler – while Dion Dublin named the Leeds striker in his Team of the Season so far.

Bamford, 27, has had a hand in 20 goals this season – scoring 14 and creating six more in assists and remains in competition at the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with nine league games left. He is also on the cusp of an England call-up.

Many have been surprised by Bamford’s excellent form, given his inconsistency during the club’s promotion to the Premier League in the Championship – and his previous failed spells in the Premier League at the likes of Burnley or Crystal Palace.

Hutchison was full of praise for Bamford, though, who has proven the critics wrong to lead the line for a Leeds side that sit in a more-than-comfortable eleventh place. Also, Dublin picked Bamford in his best XI for the first 29 games.

“I watch his finishes, and he’s got a little bit of Robbie Fowler in him. He’s a leftie, but it is the calmness I think in front of goal. When he gets inside the 18-yard box, he just passes it into the net. There’s no panic, his technique is brilliant,” Hutchison said.

TBR’s view – Fowler is a level above Bamford, but he is on his way

Many forget that Fowler scored a decent 14 goals in 33 appearances for Leeds – but of course, the former England striker scored a whopping 171 goals in 330 Liverpool matches. That is a ratio of more than one goal every two games.

That is a level above Bamford, who is only just getting the chance to show he is good enough for the Premier League. But certainly, if Bamford can keep this up for the next two or three seasons – he will certainly be considered in the same bracket.
