Don Hutchison has suggested that Georginio Wijnaldum would be a better option right now for Liverpool than Thiago Alcantara.
Better than Thiago?
Liverpool signed Thiago from Barcelona last summer and there was great excitement upon the Spaniard’s arrival at Anfield.
At the time Thiago was considered to be one of the best midfielders in world football, after an excellent year with Bayern Munich.
However, his time at Liverpool has not gone to plan to date.
Thiago endured a difficult start at the club with injuries, and didn’t quite adjust to the speed of the Premier League until the back end of last term.
Thiago did begin to show his class in the latter months of the season, but he hasn’t started a game for the Reds so far this term.
Wijnaldum, meanwhile, has left Liverpool at the end of his contract to join PSG – which earned him a £165,000-a-week contract (De Telegraaf).
And Hutchison admits that he feels that the Dutchman is a big miss to his former side, as he would have been a better option that Thiago right now.
Would Klopp agree?
In terms of quality on the ball, Thiago is well ahead of Wijnaldum.
But Wijnaldum’s energy and versatility always made him a crucial player for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Wijnaldum was very much trusted by Klopp and picked in almost every big game for Liverpool.
And Hutchison’s view may secretly be similar to Klopp’s own, judging by his team selections so far this term.
