Dominic Calvert-Lewin receives priceless advice from Alan Shearer

Everton drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in the Premier League yesterday but will have felt disappointed not to come away with all three points from the game. They lacked a clinical edge in front of goal, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin again struggling to find the back of the net.

Speaking on Match of the Day (27/04/2019), Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s deadliest striker of all time, had some words to say regarding the Everton frontman.

“I like his hold-up play, he’s good in the air, he’s a willing runner, but the one thing he has to improve in his goal-scoring…

“The one thing I would say to him is about his run. He doesn’t make it as difficult for the defender as he should do. If he makes his run toward the penalty spot then attacks the near-post he opens his options up. Then he’s in control of the situation.

“He can learn that. There are so many drills you can do in training to improve your movement.”

There is no doubt Calvert-Lewin has improved massively since the turn of the year. His work-rate and physical presence make him a menace for rival defenders. Everton fans, often his biggest critic, have been thoroughly impressed by his recent performances.

That said, the goals are still not coming.

‘DCL’ has just six goals in the Premier League this season and that figure needs to dramatically improve if he is to be a regular at this level.

Everton fans are rightly frustrated by his lack of goals, but Shearer makes a valid point. The 22-year-old has all the tools to be a top striker in the Premier League if he works at it in training.

Hopefully, over the summer, he can adapt his game and add goals to his current repertoire. Should he do that, then Everton could have a brilliant striker option on their hands.
