The new season generally brings with it new shirt numbers, reflecting fresh status within a squad and perhaps hinting at which players are set for big seasons.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin became Everton’s first-choice striker by the end of last season and has worn the number nine shirt in pre-season.
Everton’s official website says that shouldn’t be taken as confirmation of his new permanent number – “any numbered kit worn by players in training or pre-season matches shouldn’t necessarily be taken as confirmation of their squad number for the upcoming Premier League season.”
But the Englishman took to Instagram to post ‘big season ahead #DCL9’, which is a very strong hint that he is all set to be the latest incumbent of the famous shirt.
And his England Under 21 team-mates, £70 million-rated (Evening Standard) Leicester ace James Maddison and Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters responded to his excited post, full of enthusiasm.
As did new Sheffield United record signing Oli McBurnie, who will join Calvert-Lewin in the Premier League after completing his move which Yahoo Sport report was worth £20 million.
The number nine shirt is an important one at Goodison Park, and while there are concerns over Calvert-Lewin’s ability to find the net on a regular basis – which may be why Moise Kean has been signed – he does have potential.
Now it’s time for him to start showing it, becoming a reliable goalscorer for a side with huge ambitious.
