Dom Matteo has claimed in his Yorkshire Evening Post column that Leeds United and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips is now operating on a similar level to Liverpool and Chelsea stars – after shining against Everton.

Phillips, who turned 25 on Wednesday, has been shining for Leeds since the gained promotion to the Premier League. His importance and quality were proved when missing, as Leeds lost 4-1 to both Leicester and Palace.

On Saturday, Phillips produced arguably one of his best-ever Leeds performances against Everton – helping the Whites win at Goodison Park. Plenty of plaudits have come his way, even being included in Alan Shearer’s TOTW.

Leeds icon Matteo claimed the Thorp Arch academy product is playing on a similar level to £40million (Guardian) Liverpool ace Fabinho and £135k-a-week (Sun) World Cup winner and Chelsea favourite N’Golo Kante.

“He’s up there with Fabinho and Kante. I would put him at that level now,” Matteo said. “He looks like he’s more in control than a lot of players in his position when he’s on the ball, there’s a nice balance to him.

“The improvement he has made under Marcelo Bielsa is remarkable. I know the attention is on him at the minute but the players around him appreciate what he does for the team and that’s the most important thing.”

TBR’s view – How long can Leeds keep Phillips?

The hype surrounding Phillips is enormous. Pundits continue to have their say, just as Phillips continues to shine – the only bit of criticism coming from Graeme Souness about his lack of goals, which is some way off the mark.

The Mirror have claimed that Tottenham and Liverpool are looking at Phillips with the player rated at £50million. But Leeds fans will be hopeful he could become a one-club man. The better Leeds get, the more rumours will circle.
