'Doing really well': Van Bronckhorst says 22-year-old Rangers player put in such a 'smart' display last night
The Scottish Premiership outfit were 2-1 up on the night but Armando Obispo’s 78th-minute header earned the Dutch side a draw.
The Gers boss was asked about the 22-year-old defender after the game and talked up his performance on a hugely important night.
Rangers now need a result in the Netherlands next week to secure safe passage to the Champions League group stage.
Van Bronckhorst praises Sands display as Rangers draw
He said: “James is doing really well. He’s a very clever player, football intelligence is there.
“He’s very smart when defending. He knows when to duel and when not to. It’s not easy to play against a striker like Luuk De Jong’s height and physicality.
“I’m really happy with him.
“We have some centre-backs who are still injured, that’s why it’s good to see when he produces good performances.
Rangers would have been hoping to make the most of home advantage at Ibrox last night and go into the away leg with a lead to defend.
That late goal makes their job that much harder but they showed they can cause PSV problems with their intensity and slick passing.
Next week, it will be crucial to keep it tight at the back and Sands has a huge part to play in that in the light of the praise from his manager.
