Does Tottenham record-breaker Heung-min Son warrant a new contract?

Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-min Son was the hero once again at the weekend, striking late against Aston Villa to seal all three points for the UCL qualification-chasing north Londoners.

The South Korean superstar took advantage of a lapse from Bjorn Engels to slot home and take Spurs up to fifth place in the Premier League.

Spurs are now just one point behind Chelsea in fourth, although the Blues do have a game in hand.

Son’s double saw him become the first Asian player to score 50 Premier League goals, surely suggesting him as one of the club’s best-ever signings.

Bought for £22 million (BBC Sport), Son has easily repaid his transfer fee down the years and at the moment, the winger is the club’s third-highest earner on £140,000-a-week (Spotrac).

Although Son does not seem the type to go demanding a new deal, perhaps the club ought to consider preparing an improved contract for the player, who has proven his importance time and time again.

TBR’s view – Son crucial to Tottenham

It can be argued that Son, aged 27, is now coming into his prime and, theoretically, his next few years should be his best as a professional.

It is likely some of the superpowers of Europe will be aware of this, and perhaps the time could be right to attempt to prise him away from Tottenham.

Realistically, Son – who has 83 goals and 45 assists in 220 Spurs appearances – is one of the best in Europe in his position and he would improve a lot of other European big-hitters.

He has a contract with Spurs until 2023, but Spurs should definitely consider bumping Son up to top-earner status alongside Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele (both £200,000-a-week, Spotrac).

He has proven many times how vital he is in the absence of the England captain, although even when he shares the pitch with Kane he isn’t often overshadowed.

An improved contract would prove to Son how highly he is valued, and make it extremely difficult for him to be poached ahead of his peak years.
