Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should consider dropping Sadio Mane to the bench in order to give him the motivation he needs to rediscover his mojo.
The Senegal winger was particularly poor against Napoli on Tuesday.
His finishing totally deserted him at Anfield as he spurned three gilt-edged chances in the second half.
After flying out of the traps at the start of the season, Mane is now in a bit of a rut in front of goal.
In the Premier League he is without a goal in his last five outings, and has generally frustrated the crowd with his wastefulness.
In the Champions League, he hasn’t scored since the 4-0 win over Red Star Belgrade back in October – a game in which he first missed a penalty.
Time for some tough love?
Perhaps Klopp ought to consider bringing someone else into the picture, such as Xherdan Shaqiri or Daniel Sturridge.
Mane has missed some absolute sitters recently and maybe the answer is for Klopp to show that other people can come in if you don’t take your chances.
Putting Mane on the bench for a few games could instil a new found motivation and also concentration in Mane.
Perhaps he has been coasting a little in recent weeks due to a lack of a direct threat to his place in the team.
His wastefulness must be a concern for Liverpool – against Napoli, things could have been very different if not for Alisson’s brilliant save from Arka Milik at the death.
Mane is lucky the Brazilian was on hand to thwart the striker, otherwise he’d have had a lot to answer for.
