Paulo Gazzaniga is yet to fully cement his position as Tottenham’s number one goalkeeper during his time in North London, but he’s had a golden opportunity so far this season.
The Argentine has been an excellent back-up option since his move to Spurs in 2017 and had some real standout moments whenever called upon.
But the door really opened for the 27-year-old following the elbow injury to teammate Hugo Lloris this season, who has been an excellent number one in net for several years at Spurs.
Lloris has been sidelined since the beginning of October and he’s expected to return to training in the early part of 2020 (official website).
Gazzaniga has stepped in during his absence and it’s also meant that he’s played every match since Jose Mourinho’s mid-season appointment as manager.
The South American goalkeeper has played every minute of Mourinho’s seven games in charge and has had the opportunity catch the eye of his new boss.

Gazzaniga has just one clean sheet in those seven games, but overall he’s saved his teams from conceding plenty more and it’s more the backline in front of him that needs fixing moving forward.
He produced an excellent display at the weekend in the 2-1 away victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, which included a stunning reflex save from a Romain Saiss header.
Aside from the odd lapse in concentration, he’s a strong option in goal that is decent with the ball at his feet and breathes confidence to his defence.
Lloris is a World Cup-winning captain that has been a tremendous servant in the Premier League and is the club’s captain.
But the 32-year-old has noticeably allowed more slip ups to creep into his own game during the last couple of seasons and he’s not quite what he once was.
He’s capable of the ridiculous in terms of a miraculous save, but it doesn’t look like there is much to split him with Gazzaniga.
Mourinho is set to have a huge decision on his hands when they are both fit in the New Year, so Gazzaniga needs to keep trying to impress to win the permanent number one role.
