Everton have reportedly made an offer for Lille midfielder Thiago Mendes.
Le10 Sport are reporting in an exclusive that Everton have returned for the Brazilian midfielder.
As reported by La Voix Du Nord in France in January, Everton agreed a £20 million deal to sign the Brazilian from Lille that month..
However, Everton never pushed through with the deal as the need for Mendes never presented itself.
The pursuit of Mendes was in response to Idrissa Gana Gueye’s potential switch to PSG. Indeed, it seemed a deal would happen for the Senegal international. As reported by Sky Sports, Gueye asked Everton to facilitate the transfer.
However, The Mirror reported that Everton were demanding a £40 million fee to sell a key player in the middle of the season. PSG would not meet Everton’s asking price and Gueye was therefore going nowhere.
So does the latest attempt to sign Mendes suggest Everton expect a return for Gueye this summer?
As reported by Le10 Sport last week, PSG are still interested in signing the player after the African Cup of Nations this summer.
With Everton currently trying to tie down a permanent move for Andre Gomes, it could be that Mendes is being lined up as his fall-back option.
But it could easily be deduced that Everton are in fact preparing for the worst regarding Gueye’s future.
Hopefully, Everton can have the trio of Gueye, Gomes and Mendes available next season, rather than having to lose any one of them.
