John Stones

If there was ever a great story that shows just how much attention the British media give to young, English players that display some potential, it is that of John Stones. Chelsea bid a massive £45 million for him in summer 2015, and reportedly, Barcelona are set to come in with an even bigger offer for the 21-year-old. Yet somehow, Stones cannot get into the Everton starting squad.

Herein lies Martinez’s dilemma: Ramiro Funes Mori has deserved to take Stones’ spot in the side. The 24-year-old brings a different dynamic to the Everton squad: his possession statistics might not be as high—indeed, the youngster is definitely more direct going forward, which a facet that doesn’t necessarily sit with Martinez’s playing style—but he’s definitely brought about a turnaround in the Everton defensive fortunes. The Toffees have been far more sound at the back, evidenced by the fact that they are simply conceding fewer goals.

Stones has struggled lately, with a mistake against Swansea City and an uncomfortable game—admittedly out of position—against Manchester City. So his confidence may have been knocked, and it won’t hurt him to be dropped. With the European Championships lurking, Stones will need playing time to guarantee his spot in the national squad.

Hopefully for Everton fans, dropping down the pecking order will be the incentive Stones needs. We all know that he possesses immense talent and his poise and calm attitude in possession is superb. Ultimately however, should the Toffees have designs on European football this season and in the near future, Stones needs to break back into the Everton squad soon, and show his naysayers just how good he really is.
