Many big transfers were made by Premier League club’s last summer, such as Kepa Arrizabalaga joining Chelsea for £71.6 million (The Telegraph) shortly after Alisson’s move to Liverpool for £66.9 million (The Guardian).

Fred became a Manchester United player for £52 million (The Telegraph), while Manchester City purchased Riyad Mahrez for £60 million (Sky Sports).

But among all those huge deals were some very modest ones.

With almost a third of the season now gone, now seems like a good time to assess which signings have stood as the best value for money so far.

And it’s difficult to look past Merseyside, with Everton and Liverpool having seemingly pulled off a bargain each in the 2018 summer window.

Digne and Shaqiri top bargains so far?

Everton sealed a deal for French full-back Lucas Digne from Barcelona for a relatively modest fee of £18 million (BBC Sport).

Supposedly there were some add-ons included which could take it beyond the £20 million mark, but the Toffees are sure not to mind as Digne has been outstanding so far at Goodison Park.

He has looked like a real astute piece of business, and looks like he can be Leighton Baines’ long-term successor.

Down the road, Liverpool’s signing of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City for just £13 million (The Guardian) is proving to be the bargain most people thought it was at the time it went through.

The forward has been one of the Reds’ most creative players so far and although he hasn’t started every game, he has looked razor sharp and quality on the ball.

He has six goal involvements in the Premier League so far, despite making just three starts.

Cases can be made for West Ham United’s Lukas Fabianski at £7 million (Sky Sports) or Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Raul Jimenez loan as being great pieces of business, but the level of performance and consistency shown by Digne and Shaqiri certainly suggest them as being the best value purchases so far.
