Djibril Sidibe discusses Spanish interest and potential permanent Everton switch

Everton defender Djibril Sidibe has been discussing his summer move to Goodison Park and whether he would like to remain on Merseyside full time.

The Toffees snapped up the World Cup winner in the summer as cover at right-back after Jonjoe Kenny headed to Schalke on loan.

As reported by L’Equipe, the deal also includes a £12.75 million permanent option should Sidibe prove a hit at Everton.

Speaking to L’Est Eclair, Sidibe admitted there had been Spanish interest in his services over the summer but that a move to England had always appealed to him. He went on to suggest that any discussions over a permanent deal would be best left until the end of the season.

“A Spanish club had expressed to me its interest, concrete. I had contact with clubs that were not the biggest in Spain, except Atletico (Madrid). But I had Everton’s coach on the phone, with which everything went well. The feeling was good, it was very important…

“I was loaned with an option to buy but I will have my say at the time of the negotiations. My goal this season is to play, to reconnect with the great club performances. The following will depend on several factors. We will then have time to sit around a table to find out what is best for the club and for me.”

Everton certainly pulled off something of a coup with Sidibe. In recent years, injury problems have perhaps undermined the talent he clearly possesses and his inclusion in France’s World Cup-winning squad last summer is a testament to that fact.

He has steadily improved since taking over from the struggling Seamus Coleman at right-back and there is no doubt Everton will already be starting to think about securing his permanent arrival.
