Djed Spence may be dealt fresh blow with Spurs eyeing Joe Scally
One player who may not mind seeing the end of the first-half of the season is Djed Spence, with the Tottenham Hotspur summer signing barely featuring for Antonio Conte’s men since his move to North London.
Spence appeared to be an incredibly exciting addition. He arrived off the back of a superb loan spell at Nottingham Forest. And it did seem that Tottenham needed to improve their ranks in that position.
Emerson Royal has never managed to silence his critics. And Matt Doherty has had a really mixed time at Tottenham. So there appeared to be a huge opportunity for Spence to come in immediately and make himself a first-team regular.
However, that has not been the case – at all.
Conte has shown huge faith in Royal, despite his struggles. And when the Brazilian has been substituted or unavailable, it has often been Doherty who has got the nod.
Spence meanwhile, has barely managed a handful of minutes in the Premier League.
Conte previously suggested that Spence was a club signing, hinting that he was a player that he was not exactly pushing for. And his lack of game-time seems ominous – particularly when Royal has been so poor.
It is not clear what the future holds. But perhaps there is another worrying sign for Spence ahead of the January transfer window.
Joe Scally interest may be a further blow for Djed Spence at Tottenham
According to 90min, Tottenham had scouts at Borussia Monchengladbach’s win over Borussia Dortmund last week. And one of the players on their radar was right-back Joe Scally.
Scally has impressed officials at Spurs in recent months.
And with that, you have to wonder what is next for Spence should Tottenham sign Scally.
Scally is going to the World Cup with the USMNT. He may not feature a lot in Qatar. He is the youngest and most inexperienced defender in the squad. But it does further highlight that he is attracting a lot of admirers.
Scally is more than two years younger than Spence. So if he joins Tottenham, the summer signing is bound to have questions about what kind of role he will play moving forwards.
He may be relaxed about the situation. You would imagine that the 22-year-old will have had discussions with Conte about his role in the future.
But from the outside, it has been a worrying start to life at Tottenham for Spence.
Spurs signing another young right-back in the future would have the potential to be another blow.
