'Distracted': Local media suggests £40m player has been in 'bad form' ever since he's been linked with Arsenal
Arsenal target Youri Tielemans has been on bad form since links with the Gunners have sprung up, according to local media.
The Leicester Mercury have written a piece on the Belgian international after the Foxes’ 2-1 home defeat to Everton on Sunday.
That came on the back of a disappointing Europa Conference League semi-final exit at the hands of Roma, as Leicester’s hopes of winning a first European trophy came to an end.
Tielemans has been linked with Arsenal and it was reported recently that the Belgium midfielder is increasingly confident he will be joining the Gunners at the end of the season.
Arsenal target Tielemans on bad form
Their report on Tielemans reads: “There is audible frustration at his performances from inside the King Power Stadium. Plus, there is a growing feeling among City supporters that his heart is not in it, such has been the scale of the talk about his future this past year.
“Combine those factors and there seems to be a sizable part of the fanbase that would not be bothered if he never played for the club again.
“It’s difficult to know if the inaccuracy in his game of late is because he is distracted by his future as talk over a switch to Arsenal heats up. But it would not fit with his personality to have his head elsewhere.
“It is very likely that Tielemans is entering his final fortnight as a City player, but this patch of bad form – that is far from unique to him – does not need to tarnish his reputation at the club. He has been a terrific player for City and his performances suggest he is still trying to make things happen on the pitch, even if it’s not coming off.“
Tielemans’ contract with the Foxes expires at the end of next season and there is not any imminent prospect of him signing a new deal.
That means he is looking likely to leave this summer and it would be a surprise given his contract situation if the Foxes recouped the £40 million they paid to buy him in July 2019, as per the Guardian.
Tielemans is a classy midfielder with Premier League experience and plenty of room to grow, and Arsenal’s interest is no surprise.
His contract situation makes him even more appealing, and once his future is sorted, you would expect his performances to go back to their normal heights.
