Sunderland have released an official statement confirming that Lee Cattermole will leave this summer. Cattermole will leave with immediate effect, freeing him up to move to another club.
The popular tough-tackling midfielder has been with the club for 10 years from the Premier League to the Championship. The 31-year-old racked up over 250 appearances and captained the side too.
But now he is leaving the Stadium of Light. Sunderland’s official statement read: “Lee has been a great servant for SAFC and we wish to place on record our thanks for his dedication for the past 10 years and we wish him the very best in the future.”
The ex-Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic midfielder also put a statement on the club’s official site. He said: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge.”
Cattermole is now expected to join Sheffield Wednesday (according to The Sun). He will team up with former Sunderland boss Steve Bruce at Hillsborough.
Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans reacting to Cattermole’s departure.
