Disappointing loan spell is a worrying omen for Anthony Georgiou’s Tottenham future

Tottenham Hotspur sent promising starlet Anthony Georgiou out on loan at the end of the January transfer window to get him some senior playing time.

Georgiou is rated as a talented youngster at Tottenham but with first-team opportunities limited, he was farmed out on loan.

Spurs decided to send him abroad and he joined La Liga side Levante, who sit in the bottom half of the Spanish top division.

The idea was for Georgiou to get some experience at a high level and prove to Mauricio Pochettino that he is good enough to break into the side next season.

But things have not gone to plan for the 22-year-old yet and he has not played a single game for Levante’s first-team.

Instead, Georgiou has been playing for Atletico Levante – the club’s B team – who are in the third tier of Spanish football.

The twice-capped Cyprus international has played three times for Atletico Levante, according to transfermarkt, scoring once.

But the standard of football in the Spanish third tier is unlikely to convince Pochettino he is ready for first-team action.

Georgiou will return to Tottenham next summer with just one year remaining on his contract.

By the time his deal expires, the London-born left-winger will be 23 – making the 2019/20 campaign a make-or-break season.

But unless he can break into the Levante first-team this season, Georgiou’s loan spell is a worrying omen for his future prospects at Tottenham.
