Director says Tottenham loanee could offer Spurs ‘something they’ve not got’ next season

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Luke Amos could offer Spurs “something they’ve not got” at present when he returns to his parent club, according to Queens Park Rangers director of football Les Ferdinand, in conversation with Football London.

Amos has come through the Tottenham ranks and has impressed for the youth sides, going on to make his Spurs debut in the opening game of the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old saw his season cut short as he picked up an ACL injury in his third appearance of the campaign for Spurs’ Under-23s in Premier League 2 action.

After extensive rehabilitation and a return to fitness, Amos was loaned to QPR last summer, and to date he has done well in West London, with 24 Championship appearances under his belt.

Although he was an unused substitute in two of QPR’s last three league games, with a two-minute cameo in the other, Ferdinand gave the on-loan midfielder a glowing appraisal.

“He’s added goals to his game, we know what he’s capable of as he’s a good midfield player, he gets up and down, he’s got good energy and we’re seeing it,” Ferdinand told Football London.

“He’s been out of the side for the last couple of games but up until then we were seeing a level of consistency that we thought we would get and hoping to see this season.”

One thing that Spurs have been missing recently is goals from midfield, and with Christian Eriksen leaving the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, this has diminished further.

However, Ferdinand believes there is great potential in Amos, and if he can continue his progress in getting goals from midfield, he could become a useful asset for Jose Mourinho’s side next term.

“He’s shown his capabilities in the more games he’s played and if he can add a few more goals, which he did in the early part of the season, then he will be offering the Tottenham midfield something they’ve not got at the minute and that’s goals from midfield,” added Ferdinand.

TBR View:

Since Amos made his Tottenham debut back in August 2018, several other academy aces have stepped up for Spurs, including Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga, while Amos has been unfortunate with his ACL injury, but he’s put that behind him and has been doing very well at QPR.

Admittedly, Amos only has two league goals this season – both in a 5-3 loss to Barnsley in mid-December – but as a defensive midfielder who has also been deployed in defence, the opportunity to get forward and weigh in with efforts wouldn’t have been tremendously high.

Nonetheless, Ferdinand seems very happy with how Amos is progressing in games and behind the scenes, so between now and the end of the season, it’s a case of watch this space.
