West Ham fans were in for a nasty shock on Thursday morning as manager Slaven Bilic confirmed that attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet wants to leave the club, as he said:
“We have said we don’t want to sell our best players but Payet does not want to play for us. He wants to leave. We are not going to sell him. This team, the staff, we gave him everything, we were always there for him. I feel let down. I feel angry. I spoke to the chairman and this is not a money issue. We gave him a long contract because we want him to stay. We aren’t going to sell him, not whatsoever. It’s not a money issue or anything. We want to keep our best players. I expect from him to come back and to show commitment and determination to the team like the team has shown to him.”
The Times claim that the French international will not leave this month but is keen to make a return to France for family reasons, with former club Marseille keen on bringing him back to the south coast of France. The playmaker has scored 16 goals in 60 games so far for the Hammers since a £10.7 million move and was a sensation last season, but has struggled to replicate that form this campaign in a struggling team where he has largely been selected out wide. It remains to be seen how West Ham will proceed with Payet still having five years left to run on the contract he signed only 11 months ago.
