Allan McGregor completed 90 minutes in Scotland’s shocking defeat to Israel on Thursday night – and some Rangers fans on Twitter praised him for his heroic performance despite ending up on the losing side.
Alex McLeish’s team slipped to a 2-1 defeat out in Israel in the Nations League, but the scoreline could have been much worse if not for a number of top saves from Scotland’s number one.
Charlie Mulgrew had put the visitors in front in the first-half from the penalty spot, but a second-half comeback from a team ranked 94th in the world stunned Scotland.
Rangers goalkeeper McGregor had a much busier night than he may have expected and saw his net peppered at times in the contest against Israel.
The 36-year-old veteran has been in brilliant form since he re-joined the Gers in the summer and that has seen him take the number one position off Celtic counterpart Craig Gordon for Scotland.
He is playing a vital role for Steven Gerrard’s side and has particularly impressed in Europe with some top performances.
A selection of Light Blues supporters hailed their shot-stopper McGregor for his performance at international level and have become used to seeing that high standard this season.
Here is some of the Rangers tweets on the goalkeeper’s display:
Allan McGregor has been decent tonight. Pulled off some really good saves. It doesn’t however make up for the mudd in the rest of the team. @ScotlandNT

Genuinely McGregor is a step above every player in that squad.

McGregor has been phenomenal for Scotland tonight. Without him Scotland would seriously be getting humped #ISRSCO

I think Tierney is better at right back than O’Donnell!
Terrible performance from everyone apart from McGregor tonight – Not just saying that because he’s a Rangers player either.

Was at the match tonight supporting Israel – first time over here.
No wonder I don’t follow Scotland as a national side. Absolutely no fight shown throughout – except from Allan McGregor.
That man is a bright light in a dark dark dressing room.

Allan McGregor really is different gravy. Unreal that folk prefer Craig Gordon.
