Sunderland lost on penalties in Sunday’s Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth but several players can still hold their heads high.
Aiden McGeady was exceptional for the Black Cats, causing all sorts of problems for Nathan Thompson and scoring twice.
After he was fouled by Thompson on the edge of the box, the Republic of Ireland international stepped up and curled his effort over the wall to give Sunderland a first-half lead.
And then, when Portsmouth were minutes away from claiming a 2-1 victory in extra-time, McGeady popped up with another goal, firing low past the goalkeeper.

The tricky winger was then tasked with taking Sunderland’s first penalty and the pressure was immense. It was the first penalty of the shoot-out and it was in front of more than 40,000 Pompey fans.
But McGeady held his nerve and tucked his penalty in via the inside of the post. He did everything he could for Sunderland but ultimately, they fell short on penalties.
Sunderland fans still took to social media to hail McGeady’s stunning individual performance. Here are several of the best tweets.
