‘Different class’: Jermaine Jenas suggests the one Sporting player he thinks Tottenham should sign and it’s not Marcus Edwards
Jermaine Jenas has suggested the one Sporting Lisbon player he thinks Tottenham Hotspur should sign – and it’s not Marcus Edwards.
The former Spurs midfielder told BT Sport last night that he thinks Antonio Conte should target Sporting wing-back Pedro Porro.
Tottenham were held to a controversial 1-1 draw last night after Rodrigo Bentancur cancelled out Edwards’ first-half opener. Conte’s men put in a poor first-half display and were deservedly 1-0 down at half-time.
A much-improved second-half display earned the Italian’s side a point, although they feel aggrieved that Kane’s last minute effort was ruled out by VAR.
But one player from Ruben Amorim’s side that impressed Jenas was Porro. The right wing-back put in another classy display for the Portuguese outfit and the BT Sport pundit named him as the one player he would like to see Spurs sign.
Jenas suggests Spurs should sign Porro
“If I had to take one it would be Porro the right wing-back,” Jenas told BT Sport while co-commentating on last night’s game.
“I’d take him. He’s different class.”
Porro impressed once again from the wing-back spot and does seem like he would be an ideal fit for Conte’s system.
The Spaniard put in an industrious display, mixed with excellent defending and real attacking intent.
Porro only completed a permanent witch to Sporting over the summer after playing under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The Spain international had spent two seasons on loan at the Portuguese outfit and now seems to be excelling under Amorim.
He was a standout performer against Conte’s men last night and despite Edwards’ brilliant solo goal, he was arguably Sporting’s best player in north London.
Spurs have been missing real quality from the wing-back positions, particularly on the right-hand side.
Judging by his two displays against them, Porro would be an excellent addition to Conte’s squad.
Emerson Royal has failed to impress in north London due to his limited attacking qualities. Matt Doherty seems to be slowly getting back to where he was last season, but still isn’t the same player he was for a short spell before picking up a knee injury.
Conte clearly doesn’t trust Djed Spence for a role in Tottenham’s first-team at this moment in time. Spurs are crying out for quality in the wing-back areas and Porro would certainly provide this.
