'A Klopp player': Liverpool urged to sign 'very gifted' midfield talent by 2005 hero

Liverpool have been urged to sign Florian Neuhaus this summer by 2005 Champions League winning hero, Dietmar Hamman.

Neuhaus has emerged as a target for the Reds in recent months. The ‘Gladbach star is being tipped to leave Germany, and could be available for around £35m this summer.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new midfielder this summer. Gini Wijnaldum has left the club, meaning Jurgen Klopp could have a gap to plug.

Klopp does have other options. The likes of Curtis Jones could feature more, while Jordan Henderson should be fit.

However, speaking to The Athletic, Hamman – who starred in the 2005 Champions League win over Milan – believes Neuhaus is right up Jurgen Klopp’s street.

“Neuhaus would definitely suit Liverpool. Technically, he’s a very gifted player and he’s also not scared of hard work. So there’s a good mix,” Hamman said.

“He’s slight in terms of build, he’s certainly not a unit. He would probably need some time to adapt to the physical side of English football. But he’s a very good passer of the ball and he’s smart. He’s got a football brain.

“He is really a No 8 who likes to get forward and get into the box. He’s creative and a decent finisher. He’s a Klopp kind of player.”

The Reds have been linked with a number of players in midfield. Yves Bissouma of Brighton is one, while Sander Berge at Sheffield United is another.

Neuhaus clearly a fine player but do Liverpool need him?

It’s easy to assume that because Wijnaldum has left, the Reds need someone new. But do they really need to go and spend big?

As mentioned, Curtis Jones did fine last year. Fabinho will be playing midfield, while Thiago should improve. Henderson should be fit, while James Milner will still do a job if needed.

Then, the likes of Harvey Elliott have come back from loan.

So while Liverpool could replace Wijnaldum, it’s not the be-all and end-all if they don’t. This squad showed it can cope last season. It will do so again without a new midfielder.
