Dier shares what Kane said to him after 'worst moment' of his career
Eric Dier has shared on The High Performance Podcast what Harry Kane said to him immediately after the Tottenham Hotspur defender was left out of the England squad for Euro 2020 – in a decision that provided what he described as the worst moment of his career.
Dier had been a stalwart for the Three Lions since making his senior debut in 2015. He, of course, was a prominent fixture in the side that reached the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup. However, he lost his place in 2020. And he had not been involved in a squad since March of last year.
Of course, it has been a difficult few years for the 27-year-old at club level. Dier went into this season off the back of a disappointing spell with Tottenham.
That prompted Gareth Southgate to make the decision to leave Dier out of his provisional squad for Euro 2020. And he had to look on as England made it all the way to the final.
Dier has admitted that it was tough to find out that he would not be going to the tournament. But he suggested that he swiftly made the decision to try and move on – with help from his Spurs teammate.
“For me, that was probably the worst moment of my career, not going to the Euro’s. I didn’t expect it, and it was difficult for me,” he told The High Performance Podcast.
“I was with Harry at the time in Portugal. He just said to me: ‘you’ve got a whole pre-season. Take advantage of it and be in the best possible shape for the new season’. And that’s really what I tried to do.”
Eric Dier clearly took Harry Kane advice as Tottenham defender enjoys turnaround in fortunes
There have been times this term when Dier has struggled. But he does seem to have enjoyed a real turnaround in the first-half of the campaign.
That does appear to have been accelerated by the arrival of Antonio Conte. The Italian recently suggested that Dier has the potential to be one of the world’s best in his role in the back three.
It seems too soon to say whether he will be proven right. But Dier is certainly getting back on track after a difficult few years.
And with that, an England recall may not be too far away for the Tottenham man.
