Football legend Diego Maradona has spoken highly of Liverpool and of Jurgen Klopp on his Maradona in Mexico Netflix documentary, also recalling the Reds fanbase’s support during the 2005 Champions League final.

When Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool in 2015, he pledged to turn the Anfield side into a force in the space of four years (YouTube), the Reds struggling at the time and having only claimed a League Cup during the first half of the decade.

Klopp set about rebuilding Liverpool and steered the Reds to several finals in the ensuing years before finally claiming silverware in the shape of the Champions League, by which point the Anfield side had become a juggernaut which pushed Manchester City all the way in the title race.

This term, the Reds are on the verge of the Premier League title, with a 25-point gap between themselves and Man City, and have also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Maradona, who is back on the touchline himself with Gimnasia de la Plata, said he is a huge fan of Klopp and also admitted to being given a sleepless night by the fans ahead of the Miracle of Istanbul.

“I love what he conveys, the type that gives me confidence. Before at Dortmund and now in the Premier League, Klopp is always going forward,” said Maradona.

“The Liverpool supporters didn’t let me go to sleep the night before (the 2005 CL final), there were 10 of them to every three Milan supporters.

“They showed their unconditional support at half-time when they were losing 3-0 and still they didn’t stop singing.”

Previously one of the top sides in world football, Liverpool fell off the perch in the 1990s and it’s taken them a long time to return.

Admittedly it’s not all been doom and gloom since then, but save for the 2000-01 cup treble, the 2005 Champions League triumph, reaching the 2007 final again, and the odd domestic cup now and then, there hasn’t been much to shout about, especially as the league title continued to elude them.

But now, with Klopp at the helm, Liverpool can lay claim to being the best side in England – indeed, in Europe and in the world – and for such a legend as Maradona to praise them and their coach, they must be doing something right.
