It appears Diego Godin may be available this summer, with reports linking him with a move to Juventus. Tuttosport reported yesterday that the Bianconeri are one team looking at the Uruguayan this summer. They claim he has a €20 million (£17.6 million) release clause in his current deal at Atletico Madrid, a deal that expires in 2019. At 32-years-old he is now unsure whether to see his future out with Los Colchoneros or try one more challenge before retirement. It also suggests his next move will be motivated by a desire to win the Champions League, which Juventus feel gives them an advantage.
All of this information should have Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp scrambling.
Godin has proven at the World Cup that his age is not yet causing any issues with his performance. In fact, it is hard to think of a better central defender in world football today.
Liverpool currently have a settled centre-back pairing. Dejan Lovren and world record defender Virgil van Dijk performed well together in the second half of last season. But Godin would take the Liverpool defensive dimension to a new level. Coupled with the athleticism of the Dutchman, Godin and Van Dijk could easily become the best centre-back pairing in world football.
Liverpool should, therefore, join any race for Godin. If the Uruguayan wants a new challenge, what bigger challenge than the Premier League. The lure of Anfield would also be a big draw for any player of Godin’s ilk. If he wants to challenge for the Champions League title, other than Real Madrid there are not many better teams to join than defeated finalists Liverpool.
Godin would take Liverpool’s defence to another level. If he is on the move for just £17.6 million this summer, then it would be criminal if Liverpool did not have a look.
