Arsenal completed the loan signing of Denis Suarez in January.
The Spaniard agreed to move to north London for the remainder of the 2018/19 season (official website), after opportunities became hard to come by under Ernesto Valverde at Barcelona.
The move was greeted with optimism by fans, but so far the Gunners faithful are yet to see Suarez playing to anywhere near the level he is capable of.
He is yet to start under Unai Emery and has had to make do with six substitute appearances so far.
In late February, Emery admitted that his loan acquisition was struggling to adapt to the Premier League (The Mirror).
He said: “My philosophy is that adaptation needs time and after, little-by-little he will grow confidence and know his team-mates in training and after playing matches. I think it’s not OK today to play 90 minutes, because he needs rhythm.”
While Suarez continues to struggle, Paris Saint-Germain’s Christopher Nkunku appears to be faring much better.
Did Emery sign the wrong player?
Arsenal were also linked with a loan move for Nkunku in January (The Daily Mail), but a move failed to materialise and Suarez was the only incoming.
Since the failed transfer, Nkunku has actually gotten some more game time at the Parc des Princes and come into some form.
He’s started five of the last six in Ligue 1 and made two appearances in the Coupe de France.
Across those league appearances he’s scored two goals and registered one assist.
The versatile starlet is taking advantage of the injuries to Edinson Cavani and Neymar and has been featuring in a right wing position, despite naturally being a central midfielder.
It certainly would appear at the moment that Arsenal perhaps signed the wrong player in January, with Frenchman Nkunku impressing while Suarez struggles to break into Emery’s starting XI.
