Diame offers thoughts on dwindling Newcastle contract situation

Mo Diame remains relaxed over his Newcastle future despite admitting he may not get the two-year contract extension he wants, according to the Mirror.

Diame is reportedly struggling to get an extension to the Magpies deal Spotrac claim is worth £45,000 per week because he is 31 and Mike Ashley doesn’t tend to like investing big on aging players.

The midfielder said: “I’m trying to enjoy the games because it could be the last one. We’ll see what will happen. I’m happy playing for this club and these fans. If I stay, I will be happy. If I don’t, I will be happy somewhere else.

“The situation is still the same; I need two more starts to get one extra year.  I spoke with the club about my contract, I asked for two years, they don’t want that.

“It’s difficult to get an extension when you are over 30 here. It’s not a problem for me; it’s football and part of the job. If I get the opportunity to stay, I will stay. And, if not, I will go somewhere else and enjoy my football.”

There’s not much Diame can do to deal with his current situation. He knows that Newcastle won’t invest riskily in aging players – rightly or wrongly – and has to make his peace with that.

It’s difficult not to surmise that his contract situation has had an impact on his gametime since the turn of the year, but whatever the reasons, Newcastle have shown themselves to be very capable of winning matches and playing good football at times without Diame.
