Three England players have dropped out of the national team squad and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse has been drafted in.
Ward-Prowse might have considered himself unlucky to not receive a call-up to the initial squad but he has now made the cut for Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad.
England face Czech Republic and Montenegro in qualifiers for the European Championships in 2020, starting next Friday.
And Ward-Prowse is in contention for selection, which is testament to his performances for the Saints this season.
The 24-year-old has been reborn under Ralph Hasenhuttl, inspiring Southampton to climb away from the relegation zone in recent weeks.
Ward-Prowse has now scored six goals this season – including three in his last three – and it was capped by a sublime free-kick against Tottenham Hotspur recently.
Many Southampton fans feel that this call-up is well deserved as Ward-Prowse steps in for injured duo Fabian Delph and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The once-capped England international will be looking to pick up his second appearance for the Three Lions, more than two years after winning his only cap.
Here are some tributes to Ward-Prowse from Southampton fans.
