'Deserves better': Some Leeds fans hail one player's impressive display v Newcastle

Some Leeds United fans have been praising Illan Meslier for his impressive Premier League display on Friday night.

The Whites picked up their third draw of the season in matchday five’s first fixture, away at Newcastle.

Leeds took the lead in the 13th minute through Raphinha, a cross-shot which Rodrigo allowed to go through his legs and catch Karl Darlow out.

However, the hosts equalised on the stroke of half-time as Allan Saint-Maximin picked up the ball just outside the box, carved some space for himself and rifled home.

Leeds arguably should have been awarded a penalty when 1-0 up.

That said, they were wasteful on the night, spurning numerous chances to initially extend their lead and then to retake it.

Marcelo Bielsa’s charges weighed in with 22 efforts, nine of which were on target, and dominated possession.

At the same time, Newcastle had 17 shots, seven on target, and Meslier did superbly to keep the Magpies at bay.

There was little the 21-year-old could do to stop Saint-Maximin’s fierce low effort going in through the crowd of bodies.

Meslier made numerous smart saves as Newcastle were allowed to create chances time and time again.

And Leeds fans were once again delighted with his efforts:

Leeds sit 16th in the Premier League table with three draws and two defeats.

They are in League Cup third-round action away at Fulham on Tuesday, before facing West Ham at Elland Road in the league on Saturday.
