Sunderland have published their official 2019 retained and released list on the club’s website. Jack Ross has made his decisions and has decided who stays and who leaves.

Four senior players and three U23 players will depart this summer. Goalkeepers Max Stryjek and Robbin Ruiter are joined by right-back Adam Matthews and midfielder Luke Molyneux on the released list.

Young trio Max Johnstone, Connor Shields and Alex Storey also leave The Stadium of Light. These seven players have not been offered new contracts by Ross ahead of the 2019/20 season.

There are no real surprises on this list. Ruiter was always a reserve goalkeeper, Molyneux did not make the step up and Sunderland can get a cheaper player than Matthews.

But some Sunderland fans were surprised to see Stryjek’s name on the list. They felt that the Poland youth international should have been given more first-team opportunities.

The 22-year-old leaves without making his first-team debut. But he had a few loan spells away from Wearside, including a stint with Eastleigh in the 2018/19 season.

With Ruiter leaving, some Sunderland fans believed Styrjek should have been promoted. Here are some tweets discussing the young goalkeeper’s release.
