'I think': Dermot Gallagher makes interesting point about what the linesman did during Arsenal vs Wolves game

Dermot Gallagher believes Arsenal were fortunate not to give a penalty away against Wolves this weekend and were saved by an incorrect offside call.

William Saliba appeared to clatter into Goncalo Guedes inside the box. However, the offside flag had gone up and in the end, the referee simply called for that decision, with no penalty review.

Of course, the pundits watching and fans inside the stadium couldn’t believe it. But Gallagher, speaking on Sky Sports this morning, believes the incorrect offside call overruled the penalty decision, albeit, wrongly.

“I think it could have been a penalty. I think the problem here is the incorrect offside flag clouds everybodies judgement. I think it’s a foul. I think if the game goes on then a penalty would be given. But because the referee sees the flag go up, he whistles for offside. So the referee doesn’t make a decision on the penalty,” Gallagher said.

“So the VAR can’t say the referee has made a clear and obvious error, because he hasn’t. He’s given offside, so it defaults back unfortunately to an offside decision that was incorrect. If the lineman hadn’t flagged for offside he’d have given a penalty but because the game’s stopped, he can’t.”

TBR’s View: VAR continues to dominate and Arsenal got lucky

To win a title, you need a bit of luck and that is what Arsenal got here. On another day this is a penalty and it completely changes the game as well.

Saliba got away with it really. The flag going up rescued him and while Gallagher’s explanation here is good, it will still sting for Wolves fans.

For Arsenal, it’s just another decision they’ll move on quickly from. Every club gets them, so Mikel Arteta will feel no need to apologise whatsoever.
