Dermot Gallagher has given his verdict on three incidents that required checks from VAR during Sunday’s clash between Tottenham and Everton on Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch (Monday, 10.30am) – other than Son Heung-min’s red card.

The 1-1 draw was overshadowed as Andre Gomez suffered a horrendous injury that is expected to see the Portuguese ace undergo surgery on Monday. Son was sent off for the tackle, but it is widely believed that it was not the Spurs star’s fault.

The Evening Standard have claimed that Spurs are to appeal Martin Atkinson’s decision to send the South Korea captain off, in a match which saw Cenk Tosun score an injury-time equaliser to cancel out Dele Alli’s opener at Goodison Park.

Former Premier League referee Gallagher gave his opinion on three other incidents in the match. He was asked about Alli’s handball, a potential penalty for a foul on Son Heung-min and a appeals for a red card for Davinson Sanchez.

On Alli’s handball: “It should be a penalty, I must say Martin Atkinson couldn’t see it. I couldn’t see it. But when a replay was made, I thought a penalty should have been given.
On potential red card for Sanchez: “I think this all depends on whether he has clipped the player. I think there is enough doubt not to give a red card.”
On Son’s penalty claim: “I don’t think it is a penalty. Minimal contact, he has lost the opportunity to shoot. It was viewed twice, as a new angle came at the last minute.”

TBR’s view – Alli handball? Son penalty? Sanchez red card?

Gallagher is bang on in all three incidents. Alli’s hand is above his head when he handles the ball, and a penalty should have been given. For those at Stockley Park to rule against that, is barbaric – claiming Yerry Mina’s pressure pushed Alli into the ball.

Again, Gallagher is right to say that Son should have not been given a penalty during the second half and that Sanchez did not deserve a red card with little or no contact made by the Colombian on Richarlison.
