Derek Ferguson has told Open Goal’s Right In The Coupon that Steven Gerrard should leave Alfredo Morelos on the bench when the Rangers striker returns from suspension.
Morelos, 22, was sent off for elbowing Celtic captain Scott Brown on Sunday afternoon during the 2-1 Old Firm derby defeat. He has been handed four-match ban for his actions.
It is the Colombia international’s fifth red card of the season. Gerrard has told media that he will no longer defend Morelos, and the striker has apologised in a statement on Twitter to Gers fans.
Former Rangers midfielder Ferguson said that Jermain Defoe’s performance against Hearts in the 3-0 win on Wednesday night should convince Gerrard to bench Morelos. Ferguson reckons he has become arrogant.

“He will be able to give him another chance, but the penny has got to drop,” Ferguson said. “I’m delighted with Wednesday’s result. Defoe comes in and plays well, they win comfortably.
“Even when he’s back from suspension, he doesn’t go back into that starting eleven. I think he’s got a wee bit ahead of himself. He thinks ‘I’m first choice’.”
TBR’s view
Something needs to change with Morelos. The striker certainly has got too confident, perhaps with the beluef that he is Mr. Rangers. That needs to change.
We’re not talking about just helping Rangers, here. If Morelos wants to go on and become one of the best strikers in Europe – which he has the potential to do so – he must iron out his discipline problems.
Perhaps Ferguson’s idea could work. It will be new ground for Morelos to be left on the bench, and perhaps just what he deserves after getting sent off and banned for the next three games.
